| I started doing yoga about four years ago in an attempt to sort out a lower-back problem. At first, far from finding inner calm, I found the classes confusing and rather frustrating. Keeping up with the postures and relating these to the Sanskrit names, which often sounded like dishes on the menu at an Indian restaurant, was hard work. But I kept at it and gradually I found my back problems were reduced. After I'd been practising for a year or so, I heard about an Ashtanga yoga retreat in Mani, in the southern Peloponnese, which is run by Kristina Karitinos-Ireland and Michael Anastassiades. Kristina has been teaching for more than 10 years and studied this style of yoga under its founder, Pattabhi Jois. I needed a holiday and thought a week of stretching and bending in the sun might be a pleasant way of chilling out. So, ignoring the fact that I hadn't actually attempted Ashtanga - a particularly athletic discipline - before, I flew to Athens, took a bus to a Areopoli (a journey of around five hours) and checked into the Lemeni Village hotel, perched on a hillside overlooking the sea. So far, so good. |
